1. Korkeasaari Zoo

Set on its own island, established in 1889, and home to more than 150 animal species, Korkeasaari Zoo is a favourite for families. Getting there is part of the adventure: you can reach the island via the bridge from Mustikkamaa — a large recreation area with beaches, playgrounds and walking paths — or take a ferry from Market Square during summer. Arriving by metro or buses is easy too.

Once on the island, children can roam along nature trails, watch big cats, explore tropical houses and enjoy wide sea views. It’s an easy full-day outing in late spring, summer and early autumn, but the zoo is open year-round, and many species adapted to northern climates are especially active during the winter months.

2. Linnanmäki Amusement Park

Finland’s oldest amusement park, Linnanmäki, is packed with rollercoasters, classic fairground rides and lively carnival games. Many of the smaller rides are free, which makes Linnanmäki especially convenient for families with young children. One of the park’s biggest draws is its classic wooden rollercoaster, which has been delighting visitors since 1951. It’s a colourful, energetic place where families can spend hours riding, playing and exploring. Linnanmäki is open on days from late spring to late autumn.

Sea Life Helsinki is right next door, making it simple to pair the visit with an aquarium trip.

3. Suomenlinna Sea Fortress

Just a short ferry ride from Market Square, the Suomenlinna Sea Fortress extends Helsinki’s story out to sea. This 18th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site spans six islands, offering scenic walks, cafés, museums and panoramic views of the archipelago – a perfect blend of history and nature.

Families can explore old tunnels, climb on coastal cannons, visit small museums and enjoy huge grassy areas perfect for picnics. Children have the freedom to run and roam while adults take in the sea views and history. The islands are at their best from spring to early autumn but can be accessed all year.

4. Children’s Town at Helsinki City Museum

Right in the city centre, Children’s Town is a charming and completely free museum space dedicated to play and imagination. Kids can try vintage toys, dress up in old costumes, shop in a recreated general store or explore themed rooms. It’s a cosy, hands-on stop for all ages and especially useful on rainy days. Children’s Town is part of the Helsinki City Museum, which is also free to visit.

5. SkyWheel Helsinki

Down by the harbour, SkyWheel Helsinki offers a short but spectacular ride above the coastline. From your cabin you can see ferries arriving, islands scattered across the sea and the city skyline stretching out below. It’s especially lovely on bright summer evenings when the light softens over the water, and children enjoy spotting landmarks from above. There is even a dog-friendly gondola, and as a family you should consider the unique SkySauna experience as well.

6. Sea Life Helsinki

Sea Life Helsinki is an indoor underwater world filled with sharks, rays, jellyfish and a colourful coral tunnel – a calm contrast to the energy of the neighbouring amusement park, Linnanmäki. Children can explore the aquarium’s themed areas, get close to fascinating sea creatures and watch feedings throughout the day. It’s a relaxing, immersive experience in any weather – and an especially good choice on winter days or when the rain sets in.

This central green escape is ideal for families who want a calm break from the city streets. The park has open lawns for running around, shady spots for picnics and a small playground that’s popular with younger children.

The adjoining Kaisaniemi Botanic Garden features historic glasshouses filled with tropical plants — perfect on cooler or rainy days. The outdoor garden is free-of-charge while there are entrance fees for the greenhouses.

8. Seurasaari Open-Air Museum

Seurasaari is a peaceful island just outside the city centre, and Seurasaari Open-Air Museum is known for its traditional wooden houses, forest paths and famously friendly red squirrels.

The open-air museum is closed in winter, but during the summer months the island comes alive with family-friendly events — from arts and crafts markets to children’s independent tours and hands-on workshops. With no cars on the island, it feels safe and relaxed, and there’s plenty of space for children to explore freely, especially in summer and early autumn.

9. Helsinki Central Library Oodi

Oodi is far more than a library — it’s a spectacular public “living room” where families can spend hours. The children’s area is filled with play structures, reading corners and creative spaces, while older kids can try gaming zones, craft rooms and even 3D printing.

Parents can enjoy the bright architecture, soft seating and café areas. It’s free, ultra-central and perfect for winter or rainy days when you need something inspiring indoors. Right outside, Makasiinipuisto Park offers open lawns, play areas and space for children to run around before or after your visit.
