One hour’s drive from Hamar is the beautiful inland island Helgøya, well worth a visit! Simply put, Helgøya is the perfect place for a daytrip with beautiful hiking trails, an amazing climbing park and great eateries.

Here, you and your family can fly down zip lines and climb various trails between the trees at different heights and difficulty levels. Afterwards you can stroll along the Bee Trail biestien, where you can learn more about the secret life of bees whilst enjoying the great outdoors. End your daytrip with a delicious meal at the renowned Skafferiet. It doesn’t get much better than this!

Our vision is "airy experiences for everyone" in what is probably Norway’s most beautiful and largest climbing park. We want everyone to feel confident to have fun in our trees. We have 9 trails, 13 zip lines and Norway’s longest zip line (430 metres) in one climbing park - Elisabeth Stai, General Manager Helgøya Klatrepark.

Atlungstad brenneri is Norway’s only remaining potato distillery still in operation. In summer, you can enjoy anything from guided tours and aquavit tasting to shows and concerts in the old, beautiful buildings.

Atlungstad Brenneri is Norway’s oldest distillery still in operation. Our goal is to provide the best aquavit as well as to tell the story behind the distillery to our visitors in the best possible way. - Ole-Volden-Sandersen, CEO.

This might not be our most family friendly suggestion for things to do in Hamar, but it’s the perfect activity for solo travellers, couples, friends and colleagues! You can drive to the distillery in only 10 minutes from central Hamar, or you can go by bus for 30 minutes.

Ironically enough, you can jump free of charge from what is known as Norway’s most expensive diving platform, in Koigen. You cannot visit Hamre without jumping from the diving platform, regardless of season!

Koigen is a recreational area by lake Mjøsa, only ten minutes’ walk from the many hotels in central Hamar hotel. Here you also find a skatepark, sand volleyball courts, basketball courts and a sandy beach!

Domkirkeodden

Domkirkeodden has been voted the most beautiful museum in the world, so you really cannot miss it. Here you can see the incredibly stunning glass cathedral Hamardomen, elegantly and impressively built around the ruins of Gamle Hamar domkirke – Old Hamar Cathedral.

Remember to prebook a guided tour if you are visiting Hamar in winter – the museum closes in winter and only accepts prebookings.

Get a boost of culture at Gregers

At the old fire station on Grønnegata 70 in Hamar you find Gregers bar and the live stage Gregers Live – known as the ultimate meeting place for culture lovers in Hamar. Gregers offers a good and relaxed atmosphere, delicious drinks and great concerts, and is located only 300 metres from elegant Clarion Collection® Hotel Astoria.

Norwegian Railway Museum – a lot more fun than it sounds!

Hamar is also home to Norwegian Railway museum Norsk jernbanemuseum. It might sound a bit boring to those who aren’t interested but you couldn’t be more wrong. The railway museum was actually Norway’s first technology museum and they offer plenty of fun activities for kids and adults alike.

We’re talking great fun – for example, they have an custom-built locomotive for the kids to play in as they please. In summer, the museum park is open where the entire family can walk a trail and find checkpoints.
