1. Explore The Whaling Museum

As Europe's only specialized museum in its field, the Whaling Museum in Sandefjord is a must. Gain a unique insight into the city's proud, yet controversial history as the world's whaling capital. The museum offers exhibitions featuring everything from a gigantic blue whale model hanging from the ceiling, to gripping stories about seafarers and natural resources in Antarctica.

After your museum visit, head down to the harbor to see the Whaling Monument. The rotating bronze sculpture is one of Sandefjord's most famous landmarks, making it the perfect spot for a photo with the fjord in the background.

A highlight is the hike out to the historic Tønsberg tønne at the very tip of Vesterøya. Here, you wander through varied terrain of forests and smooth coastal rocks before ending up at a spectacular panoramic view of the fjord. Along the way, you can stop at idyllic swimming spots or explore World War II ruins at Folehavna Fort.

3. The Gokstad Ship and Viking History

Sandefjord holds a unique place in Norwegian history as the discovery site of the world-famous Gokstad Ship. The ship, which was excavated in 1880 and dates back to around the year 900, is one of the most important symbols of the Viking Age. Although the original ship is currently housed in a museum in Oslo, you can visit the impressive Gokstadhaugen burial mound where it was found.

For a more immersive experience, you should head down to the harbor. Here, Gaia, an exact replica of the Gokstad Ship, is often moored. Seeing the ship on the water gives an authentic sense of how the Vikings sailed out from Vestfold. This is an educational experience for both history enthusiasts and families with children.
