  • Experience Christmas in Stockholm

    There’s something special about Stockholm in the run-up to Christmas. Festive lights brighten the winter darkness and, with a little luck, snow blankets the rooftops and cobbled streets.

  • Walk through Gamla stan, Stockholm’s old town, and along streets decorated for Christmas. Along the way, warm your hands around a cup of hot chocolate as you take in the sights.

  • Then head to one of Stockholm’s Christmas markets, where the scent of glögg, Sweden’s mulled wine, and roasted almonds fills the air, Christmas music plays and stalls tempt you with all the festive favourites.

Christmas market at Hovstallet

Hovstallet, the Swedish King’s Royal Stables, hosts a Christmas market in a truly distinctive setting. Exhibitors and craftspeople from across Sweden gather here, while the blacksmith works in the smithy, making traditional ironwork. Take the opportunity to meet the King’s horses and browse the well-stocked food stall for festive delicacies. It’s a Christmas market that brings together craftsmanship, history and royal surroundings in Stockholm’s Östermalm district.

Stortorget in Gamla stan

Stortorget, the main square in Stockholm’s old town, Gamla stan, hosts one of Sweden’s oldest Christmas markets. The stalls offer everything from sweets, cheeses and Christmas sausages to decorative ironwork, pottery and traditional crafts. Nearby Stockholm Cathedral, known as Storkyrkan, and the old town’s historic buildings provide a backdrop that makes it hard not to get into the Christmas spirit. Browse the stalls with a mug of warm glögg, Swedish mulled wine, and a gingerbread biscuit in hand, and enjoy a much-loved Christmas tradition in the heart of Stockholm.

Christmas market at Skansen

Skansen, Stockholm’s open-air museum, hosts one of the city’s most established Christmas markets, a tradition dating back to 1903. Explore Swedish Christmas customs from years gone by in the historic town quarters, and browse stalls selling crafts, festive delicacies and sweets. Warm up with a mug of glögg and sample everything from kolbullar, traditional Swedish pancakes with pork, to candied almonds. You can also dance around the Christmas tree, make decorations and meet the animals. There’s plenty for both children and adults to discover.

Christmas market in Sigtuna

Sigtuna is considered Sweden’s oldest town and lies about an hour from Stockholm. On the four Sundays of Advent, traders fill the streets lined with old wooden houses, creating a traditional Christmas atmosphere. There’s something for the whole family, with choirs, traditional Swedish Lucia processions, a second-hand book market and visits from Father Christmas. Explore the town in all its festive finery when you visit the market.

Stenladan in Steninge slottsby

Just outside Sigtuna lies Steninge slottsby, where you’ll find a festive atmosphere in Stenladan, a historic stone barn. Christmas trees strung with lights lead the way to the barn, where you can browse distinctive Christmas gifts, delicacies for the festive table and decorations for your home. You’ll also find glassware, porcelain and home accessories in the Steningekompaniet and Newport shops. Step inside, warm up and enjoy the festive treats.
