Discover Arendal

Discover Arendal

Welcome to Arendal – often called the “Venice of the North,” a name inspired by its old town originally built on seven islets separated by canals. Today, the city blends historic charm with a vibrant harbour life and hosts “Arendalsuka”, Norway’s largest political festival.

Where history meets modern democracy

Discover Arendal’s unique character in Tyholmen, the historic heart of the city. This district features beautifully preserved wooden houses from the 17th century and leads to Pollen, the lively inner harbour. Stroll through narrow streets, admire Arendal Old Town Hall and explore Kløckers Hus, a former merchant’s home now serving as a museum. The waterfront buzzes with outdoor restaurants and street food, while the glass elevator to Fløyheia rewards you with panoramic views of the city and archipelago. With centrally located hotels, you are always close to the main sights and the city’s welcoming atmosphere – and every August, the hotels provide the perfect base for "Arendalsuka", Norway’s largest political festival.

What to do in Arendal

Arendal is the gateway to Raet National Park, a unique coastal and marine landscape stretching along Southern Norway. From Pollen, you can take a ferry to Merdø, a car-free island with sandy beaches, short hiking trails, a small museum and a summer café. Boat trips also bring you to the twin Torungen lighthouses, which have guided sailors for centuries. The archipelago invites exploration by kayak, paddleboard or even underwater safari, while Tromøya and Hisøy offer coastal trails and family-friendly beaches like Løkholmen.

Culture and family fun

Arendal also offers a rich cultural scene. KUBEN presents exhibitions on local history and industry, while Bomuldsfabriken Kunsthall showcases contemporary art in a former textile factory. The Arendal Culture House (Arendal Kulturhus) is one of Southern Norway’s largest venues, hosting concerts, theatre and festivals year-round. Every August, the city comes alive with Arendalsuka, Norway’s largest political festival, filling the streets and waterfront with debates, cultural events and thousands of visitors. Families can visit Vitensenteret Sørlandet, a hands-on science centre with interactive exhibits on technology, mathematics and marine life. For something sweet, stop by Heimdal Chokolade, Norway’s smallest chocolate factory, known for its handmade treats.

Restaurants and conferences

Arendal has plenty of restaurants and cafés, many around Pollen harbour where seafood and local dishes meet waterfront views. The city also offers modern meeting and conference facilities, with venues suited for everything from small gatherings to large events.
