Discover Mo i Rana

Welcome to Mo i Rana in Norway – a city where industrial heritage meets spectacular northern nature. Located on the Ranfjord, just south of the Arctic Circle, this northern town combines dramatic landscapes, fascinating history and a vibrant cultural scene.

An Arctic Circle city with an industrial soul

Mo i Rana’s story is one of contrasts – from steel and industry to culture and nature. Once known as the “Ironworks City,” it has evolved into a modern and welcoming town with a distinct northern character. Explore the compact town centre with its shops, cafés and restaurants, and visit Havmannen – the granite sculpture rising from the fjord, symbolising the city’s connection between the sea, its people and its industry. Don’t miss Moholmen, the oldest part of Mo i Rana, where well-preserved wooden houses from the 17th- and 18th-centuries line narrow lanes beside the fjord. A short drive north, the Arctic Circle Centre (Polarsirkelsenteret) marks latitude 66°33'N – the official gateway to Norway’s polar regions.

Caves, marble and cultural heritage

Beneath the surface, Mo i Rana reveals an entirely different world. Take a guided tour of Grønligrotta, one of Norway’s largest accessible limestone caves, where an underground river runs through vast halls of stone – or explore Setergrotta for a more adventurous experience. The Rana Museum tells the story of the region’s industrial growth and natural environment. Don’t miss “The Marble Castle” (Marmorslottet) – a spectacular natural formation of polished marble carved by glacial rivers into sculptural shapes.

Nature and Arctic experiences

Nature embraces Mo i Rana from every direction. Visit Svartisen, Norway’s second-largest glacier, reachable by a short boat trip and a hike – an unforgettable experience in any season. The Ranfjord and the nearby Ranaelva River offer excellent opportunities for fishing, kayaking and scenic boat trips, while Saltfjellet–Svartisen National Park invites you to hike through pristine wilderness. From late autumn to early spring, the Northern Lights often colour the night sky, and in the height of summer, long daylight hours illuminate the landscape – perfect for exploring mountains, lakes and coastlines.

Meetings and events

Mo i Rana is an inspiring destination for meetings and conferences. Surrounded by fjords, mountains and vast northern landscapes, the city offers the perfect backdrop for company events with overnight stays, where work and shared experiences come naturally together.
