Behind the homely setting lies a dark history. From 1847 to 1967, the building held both criminal inmates and patients who were considered “insane”. Some ended up in the notorious isolation cells in the basement – dark rooms where time stood still.
Among the most infamous prisoners was the priest Anders Lindbäck, accused of poisoning several members of his congregation in the 1860s. He was arrested and sentenced to death, but before the execution could take place, he took his own life in the prison. According to legend, his spirit has never left the building.
