Nature in Ålesund
Alnes Lighthouse📍
The beautiful Alnes Lighthouse is situated on the outer edge of Godøya, a 30-minute drive west of Ålesund. At this protected landmark and inside the old keeper's house, you can dive into local coastal history, enjoy the surroundings, or climb up into the lighthouse itself.
Right next door, you'll find a modern visitor center featuring an art gallery and year-round café. They serve traditional Norwegian food, a hot dish of the day, open-faced sandwiches, Norwegian pancakes (sveler), and homemade cakes—all accompanied by panoramic ocean views.
Storhornet📍
If you're visiting Alnes Lighthouse, consider combining it with a summit hike up Storhornet on Godøya. Starting near the lighthouse, this fantastic trail is slightly more physically demanding. Plan for about 4 hours round-trip, and don't forget to stop at the spectacular Johan Skytt Rock—a majestic photo spot where the rock juts straight out over the edge!
Sukkertoppen📍
Towering 314 meters above sea level, Sukkertoppen is one of Ålesund's most popular viewpoints. The hike up is just the right length and suitable for most, rewarding you with a 360-degree panoramic view of the city, the surrounding islands, the ocean, and the Sunnmøre Alps. The trail starts on Hessa, roughly a 10-minute drive from Ålesund city center.
Stair workouts and aerial challenges
Mount Aksla
No visit to Ålesund is complete without a trip up Mount Aksla. From the top, you get a classic panoramic view of the town, the islands, and the Sunnmøre Alps. The most iconic route goes via 418 steps up from Byparken (the Town Park) to Fjellstua. If you're looking for more excitement, you can take the climbing route up Norway's only urban via ferrata right along the cliff face.
