Discover Harstad

Welcome to Harstad – a vibrant coastal city in Northern Norway, beautifully situated on the island of Hinnøya. Known as the gateway to Vesterålen and Lofoten, Harstad combines Arctic nature, cultural heritage and a lively urban atmosphere, offering unforgettable experiences throughout the year.

History, culture and city life

Harstad’s compact centre is easy to explore on foot, with shops, cafés and restaurants surrounding Rikard Kaarbøs plass and the modern Larsneset waterfront. The city’s history stretches from the Viking Age to the Second World War and beyond. On the Trondenes Peninsula, visit Trondenes Church – the world’s northernmost medieval stone church – and the Trondenes Historical Centre, which brings centuries of local history to life. Nearby, the massive Adolf Gun stands as one of Europe’s largest land-based cannons, a powerful reminder of wartime history.
Harstad is also one of Northern Norway’s leading cultural hubs, home to the Festspillene i Nord-Norge (Arctic Arts Festival), Harstad Kulturhus, and Galleri Nord-Norge, which together ensure a year-round calendar of music, theatre and exhibitions. Families can also enjoy Grottebadet, an impressive waterpark built inside a mountain right in the city centre.

Nature and outdoor experiences

Harstad’s surroundings offer spectacular nature and outdoor adventures. The region’s archipelago is dotted with quiet coves and white beaches – perfect for kayaking, sailing or RIB safaris among islands teeming with sea eagles and, in season, whales and orcas. Popular hikes include Keipen, rewarding visitors with sweeping views across fjords and mountains.
Harstad also makes an excellent starting point for day trips to Lofoten and Vesterålen, with easy connections by ferry or car through some of Northern Norway’s most dramatic coastal landscapes.
For something more relaxing, try the VÅG Havbadstue, a fjord sauna, or visit Nupen, a scenic viewpoint known as one of the most romantic sunset spots in Norway – and a favourite place to experience the endless glow of the Arctic summer sun.

Northern lights and midnight sun

In Harstad, nature’s great Arctic phenomena are part of everyday life. The city lies within the auroral zone, making it one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights from late autumn to early spring. In summer, the Midnight Sun takes over, bathing the landscape in golden light for weeks on end – perfect for enjoying the quiet beauty of bright northern nights.

Restaurants and conferences

Harstad’s dining scene reflects both its coastal setting and creative energy giving you a culinary experience. For business travellers, Harstad provides excellent conference and meeting facilities – many located close to the waterfront and surrounded by striking Arctic scenery, ideal for combining work, culture and relaxation.
