Discover Kristiansund

Welcome to Kristiansund – a vibrant coastal town set on Norway’s northwestern shore, where life unfolds across four islands facing the Norwegian Sea. With deep maritime roots, colourful harbour life and easy access to nature, Kristiansund offers an authentic insight into Norway’s coastal heritage.

Island city and clipfish heritage

Kristiansund’s history and identity are deeply rooted in the clipfish trade, which shaped the town from the late 17th century onwards. Try the local version of bacalao – a hearty dish inspired by southern European traditions and made with Kristiansund’s own clipfish – served in many of the city’s restaurants. You can also visit the statue of the Clipfish Woman, which honours the generations of women who worked in this proud coastal industry.
The city spans several islands – Kirkelandet, Nordlandet, Innlandet and Gomalandet – linked by bridges and by the historic Sundbåten harbour ferry, one of the world’s oldest public transport services still in daily operation, continuing to carry locals and visitors across the harbour.

Culture, history and city life

Learn about the town’s maritime past at the Norwegian Clipfish Museum, housed in an 18th-century wharf building, or visit Mellemværftet – Norway’s only working shipyard museum. The city also boasts a vibrant cultural scene: Festiviteten, dating back to 1914, is home to Norway’s oldest continuously operating opera company, Operaen i Kristiansund. Each year, the Opera Festival brings classical performances to the town, while the Nordic Light Festival of Photography fills streets and galleries with exhibitions and creative energy.

Coastal adventures and scenic views

From Kristiansund, the sea is never far away. Take a boat trip to Grip, a small island village 14 kilometres offshore, with colourful wooden houses and one of Norway’s smallest stave churches. A short drive south takes you to the Atlantic Road (Atlanterhavsveien) – a world-renowned coastal route where bridges leap between islands and skerries, offering a breathtaking encounter with Norway’s untamed coastline. For panoramic views, hike up Freikollen or visit Varden Viewpoint, or enjoy a stroll through Kringsjå Park, where coastal paths overlook both town and sea.

Restaurants and conferences

Kristiansund’s restaurants celebrate the town’s maritime heritage – from fresh seafood straight off the boats to the classic bacalao served with a modern twist. Along the harbour, cafés and restaurants invite you to enjoy relaxed meals with sea views. For meetings, conferences or private events, Kristiansund offers modern venues where history, coastal light and genuine hospitality create the perfect setting for memorable gatherings.
