Stavanger Cathedral, Norway’s oldest, and the Norwegian Petroleum Museum showcase the city’s past and present. For views, head to Valberget Viewpoint or the Botanical Garden by Ullandhaugtårnet, where the tower overlooks city, fjords and mountains.
Just outside the centre stands Sverd i fjell (Swords in Rock), a striking monument of three bronze swords, almost 10 metres tall. It commemorates the Viking battle that united Norway and symbolises peace, with the swords planted in the rock never to be used again.
Stavanger’s cultural life is both diverse and vibrant.
