For generations, Tove Jansson's stories about the Moomins have touched us. We have been driven to distraction by Little My's hijinx, been frightened by the Groke and let ourselves be charmed by the Moomin’s love for the Snork Maiden. Fortunately, there is a place where we can experience all this once more.

On the island of Kailo, right by the cosy town of Naantali, you will find the Moonminvalley, which is called Muumimaailma in Finnish. The theme park is based on Tove Jansson's books about the Moomins and their friends, and was opened in 1993 following the initiative of the comic book series from the early 1990s. There is a lot of fun to be had in the park, so let's take a closer look..

Fun experiences for the little ones

While for the youngest it is both exciting and fun to discover everything the park has to offer, it can awaken a warm, nostalgic feeling for adults while strolling around. At Emma's theatre, the family can see plays and musicals – the plays are performed in both Finnish and Swedish.

When they are not on stage, the characters walk around the park greeting the children. Then the children get the opportunity to say hello to well-known characters such as Moomin, Moominmamma, Snufkin, Sniff, Little My and many, many more.

There are also several well-known places to visit around the park. Perhaps the most recognizable is the Moominhouse, which it is also possible to enter and explore. Right by the Moominhouse you will find the Moomintroll house, which the Moomins built to escape all of Little My’s rampent siblings.

In addition to these, there are also many other places to explore, and in the summer it is possible to swim down on the beach. For souvenirs, you can go to Sniff's shop, and if your sweet tooth kicks in, then Little My's sweet shop is the place for you. In addition, there are several dining options to choose from, and many activities to join in on. You can play games such as the Wheel of Fortune, have your face painted, take a picture with a Moomin at Pappas foto or learn the story of the big diamond as you walk along the Nature Trail.

Having a nice time in Naantali and Helsinki

To get to the theme park, you can take a ferry from Stockholm to Turku, and from there to Naantali. It is also possible to take a boat to Helsinki, and drive from there for about two hours. If you have not travelled to Finland by car, you can take a train from Helsinki and then transfer to a bus.

Naantali is called Finland's sunniest city, and once you have made the trip to visit the Moomin world we highly recommend spending some time in Naantali as well. Here you can stroll along the cosy little houses on the harbour, dine at one of the city's restaurants or cafés or go bathing on the beach in the summer.

Since you have finally travelled to Finland, it may be nice to spend a few days in Helsinki. The beautiful capital offers, among other things, great architecture, good food and great shopping.
