Drøbak is famously home to the official address of the Norwegian Santa Claus, and its festive spirit can be felt all year round. At Tregaardens Julehus (The Christmas House), visitors can explore a world of ornaments, gifts and decorations, and even send a letter from Santa’s Post Office, complete with its own special postmark.

What to do in Drøbak

The compact town centre is full of character, with narrow streets lined with colourful 18th-century wooden houses and small galleries. Known as the Sunday town, Drøbak keeps its shops open every Sunday throughout the year, making it a popular day-trip destination from Oslo. But with its coastal charm, it’s well worth staying the night to experience the town at a slower pace.
Drøbak’s most famous landmark is Oscarsborg Fortress, located on an island very close to the town. The fortress played a crucial role in World War II when the German cruiser Blücher was sunk here on 9 April 1940 – an event that delayed the German occupation of Norway. Today, visitors can explore the museum, exhibitions and open-air concerts during summer.
The town also offers cultural highlights such as Drøbak Aquarium and the charming Drøbak Church from 1776. A stroll along the marina leads to The Three Mermaids, one of Drøbak’s most photographed sculptures. The town has long attracted artists, giving it a vibrant gallery scene – and it’s even home to the world’s only Lutefisk Museum, dedicated to Norway’s traditional dried and rehydrated cod dish.
